Vigorous climbfest: only the most fit need apply. 6000' vertical gain.

Not accessible by rail. Access is by car, via Rt 28 west 31 miles from Exit 19 of the NY State Thruway/ I-87. Big Indian is the intersection of Rt 28 and Rts 47 to the south and Rt 92. Parking is just west of the intersection on the south (left) side of Rt 28. It is about a 2 and a half hour drive from NYC.

A public drinking water pipe is on Sugarloaf, on the left, less than 0.1 mile past the turn for Red Hill.

Original cue sheet incorrectly says Yagerville Rd to end, but actually a left on Greenville Rd.

A public drinking water pipe is on Sugarloaf, on the left, less than 0.1 mile past the turn for Red Hill.

2 deli stops possible on route.

Sugarloaf/ Red Hill ascent, 1600', is the greatest vertical climb in our region.

No mileage, you will need a map. Hilly. "Vogel Route" which loosely translates into a worthwhile adventure with some hard pack thrown in. Or, as Jeff says, "A "Vogel Route" means it has beautiful scenery and very low traffic but a total disregard for road surface and "tilt" of the road. This route has 3 sections of 16-17% grades. If that doesn't make it a "5" what does?"

Accessible only by car. All of 13 turns in 77 miles. You will probably see fewer cars than turns.

Steep, with sections of unpaved roads. Ride too long for mtn bike: road bike with 25m or greater tires or cyclocross. Stroke of genius route of John Z. Food/fluids available on 47/Frost Valley Rd, on the right, just before Rt 28 at mile 34. Possible food/fluid at Beaverkill.

Remote and difficult to access, this route is well worth the effort. But leave enough time to complete the ride in daylight.

Either stay in Phoenicia or car top to and from it.

Big country with few cross roads.

These are mountain passes, not summit ascents.

Food/fluid options in Grahamsville and West Ashoken.
