The B-STS is a weekly series of progressive Saturday rides for dedicated and committed NYCC members. The goal of the series is to increase your riding stamina in a group riding environment, to make new friends and to reacquaint with old friends, and to have fun doing it.

The Basics

The B-STS is reserved for current, dues-paying members of the NYCC. Rides will be held on Saturdays. In the case of inclement weather, we may ride on Sunday.

All rides will be posted to the NYCC ride calendar as B-level rides. That means we are doing away with season pre-registration and abolishing the season-long roster. All capable riders at the B-level are welcome... Every ride is a new ride, and a new opportunity to hit the road! All caveats about this to be shared below, so read onward.

  • Registration for each B-STS ride will open, as usual for posted rides, 10 days before the ride date.
  • Capacity for each ride will depend on the leaders who volunteer to be captains. (Note: ride preparation is handled by the coordinator)
  • There will be a single signup for each ride; we will assign speed groups at each start point.
  • There are no requirements for prior attendance, but you (and your bicycle) ought to be in-shape enough for the rides (or portions of rides) that you attempt! You may be asked to bail from a ride if you have a serious physical or mechanical issue.

Note: You may participate in only one SIG or STS program at a time.

All are welcome to attend the February club meeting to hear more about the B-STS program and meet its leaders.

Safety has always been, and will remain, the primary objective. All B-STS participants should be graduates of the B-SIG or experienced B-level riders; the B-STS is NOT an instructional ride series. Your participation is conditional on your ability to demonstrate safe and steady riding skills. All participants are expected to be proficient in group riding etiquette, to know basic bicycle maintenance, to be familiar with the routes on the rides, and to have a willingness (and responsibility) to take turns pulling during the rides.

What to Expect

At first we will ride together at a slower, steady pace. Eventually our rides will split into two group types: a group targeting 18mph as a conditioning goal, and a group targeting 16mph. (we may have other speed groups, too - to be determined)

Important information is shared during the pre-ride remarks, and it is necessary to be present at the start of the ride.

We would urge you to find your best-fit peer riders in the initial weeks, and stay within that group. This will enable you to be comfortable with your partners, and to develop cohesiveness within your group, which is one of the goals of the series. If you intend to go ìoff the frontî if the group is not keeping up with your pace, just let the ride leaders know when you make that decision.

Our rides will start off easy (flat + short), than gradually progress in mileage and degree of difficulty. Rest stops will be kept to a minimum, in both number of stops and their duration. In lieu of stopping at a diner for a sit down lunch, quick deli stops will be the norm.

The Fine Print

These are standard club rides, not a SIG-level training program. We will make a fair effort to accommodate a wide variety of cyclists with different abilities, especially in the beginning. Each participant is expected to be able to keep up, and if necessary, to be able to find his or her way home. Therefore, please be deliberate in pairing with riding partners who fit your style, fitness, and etiquette best. Groups may drop sluggish riders and all participants should be self-sufficient in case a severe mechanical issue or a fitness issue keeps you from proceeding.
