Note: subsequent to the posting of this ride, the trail in Ninham SP has been altered. A new foot trail begins off Gipsy Trail where the section described below begins as well. The new trail obscures the old route to Coles Mills Road. Should someone sort this out, please get back to me with details. In the meantime, should you become flustered, just ride up the access road to the parking lot on the road to the fire tower and continue the route. HS 4/27/2021

There is no way to access Black Rock Preserve on a bike without an ascent. Mtn Rd goes right for your jugulars, but it is paved. The culvert tunnel under Rt 9W at the top of Mtn Rd is the rabbit hole into this wonderland.

A bike permit is required for Black Rock Preserve.

Easy enough.

But these trails are subject to wear when wet. Your bike will pick up a heavy clay mud in the process. Before you go, check with this site to assess riding conditions: http://www.mtbnj.com/forum/threads/6-mile-run-conditions.23594/page-384

When you emerge at the far side of Six Mile Run you can take the Delaware and Raritan Canal towpath either to the right, back to New Brunswick, or left, on to Princeton or Trenton.

A one hour ride on Metro North's Harlem line will take you to Pleasantville from GCT.

Ask the conductor on boarding if all doors will open at Pleasantville. If in doubt, ride no further back than the 3rd car from the rear.

Exit the stairs at the rear of the train.

Easy peasy. Less than an hour on the LIRR out of NY Penn Station; you don't have to change at Jamaica. You do need a Metro North Bike Pass, otherwise the only thing standing between the terminal at Port Washington and interesting singletrack at Hempstead Harbor Woods is a 207' climb and descent. The highest point in the climb is akin to the highest point in Manhattan. Not to break out in a sweat; the grade is manageable, and you are on a mountain bike.
