Many in the club conflate quantity of miles with quality. This route is short but sweat (sic)—only 36 miles; but don’t be misled by its short distance: it is exceedingly challenging unless you’re an easy climber.

Up Booth, up Morrow, up Next Day, up Speer, up Churchill, up Leroy-Buckingham, up Walnut, with grades of 10,12, 14, 16, even 18% in spots.  …With the uphills coming pretty much one right after another. And the surprise is you're never far from home, never more than 6.5 miles from the bridge.

The proper name for this road is Henry Hudson Drive, but we in the NYCC and the rest of the NYC cycling world call it River Road.

Richard Rosenthal’s Climbathon ride is now deeply embedded in the culture of the NYCC.  Richard has been leading this ride since conjuring it up in 1992, and countless members have discovered these roads through Richard’s ride and informative commentary.  The name of the route is apt.  Richard includes a feast of the toughest climbs between the GWB and Piermont, starting with Alpine, the beautiful digression to the river in Sneden’s Landing, Bradley/Tweed to Piermont, Tallman, and to cap things off, a visit to “The Presidents” highlighted by the climb of Eisenhower up to the

June 28, 2022: NB: Erosion on the Awosting Portal is deepening, making climbing a bit more difficult, but the descent in places is now in the technical realm.
