This is an excellent way for strong C riders and slower B riders to do Bear Mountain. Take Metro North to Cold Spring. You start with a 10-mile warm-up ride from the Cold Spring train station and then do the 4-mile climb up Bear Mountain while you have lots of energy. After the descent there are still a couple of shorter climbs before lunch at the Cove Deli. Then it's mostly pleasant side roads and rail trail to get home, with a second snack/ice cream stop in W. Nyack. Ride ends on the NY side of the GW Bridge.

Route with 2 endings on the different RWGPS routes. The main link is the Peekskill ending, the Southeast ending is listed just under waypoints, above.

Orchard lunch stop. Did I say beautiful roads and lots of hills? Well, not hilly by John's standards but hilly enough for mere mortals. "Who could ask for anything more?"

Note of December 2022: The Hudson River Greenway north of 181st St to Dyckman St is closed due to reconstruction; it needs it! Recommended re-route is 182nd St overpass> 181st St> Cabrini north> 190th St> Overlook Terrace> 187th St>Broadway, north> Bennett Av>. You will be doing the first half of the descent from Ft Washington Ave on Overlook to 187th to Broadway going north, then taking a left onto Bennett. You will now be back on the route. I did not update the GPS file or the cue sheet.

Credit for this route goes to John Z.
June 28, 2022: NB: Erosion on the Awosting Portal is deepening, making climbing a bit more difficult, but the descent in places is now in the technical realm.

There is no way to access Black Rock Preserve on a bike without an ascent. Mtn Rd goes right for your jugulars, but it is paved. The culvert tunnel under Rt 9W at the top of Mtn Rd is the rabbit hole into this wonderland.

A bike permit is required for Black Rock Preserve.

Oh my, this is one of the toughest ascents in our region, and it is only an access road!
