Biography

Steve and his partner Adam next to their bikes

Steve has been riding a bike in New York City since high school.  With his partner Adam White, he heads the law office of Vaccaro & White, a law firm specializing in representing cyclists for twenty years.  Steve and Adam not only represent cyclists injured in crashes and by road defects, they also have represented cyclists in class actions against the New York City Police Department and the Department of Motor Vehicles to win fair treatment for cyclists.

Steve has drafted legislation to protect the rights of cyclists and pedestrians, including the Right of Way Law, which created the first criminal penalty for striking a cyclist with the right of way.  He will speak about another bill he is working on with City Council Member Brad Lander, which takes a groundbreaking approach to getting reckless drivers off New York City streets.

It’s because of this work that Steve was profiled in the New York Law Journal as perhaps New York City’s best-known lawyer advocate for bicyclist and pedestrian rights.

Steve has been a member of the Transportation Alternatives Advisory Council for over ten years, and a columnist for Streetsblog where he writes the “Street Justice” column and is the founder of StreetsPAC, the political action committee that supports elected officials who champion cyclists and pedestrians’ rights.
